Beverage Company Shutdown for Breaching Environmental Protection and Management Law

EPA Acting Executive Director, Hon. Dobayou

Authorities of the Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia (EPA) on Friday, September 25, 2020 shut down the operation of S.S.S. Private Limited, a beverage producing company located in Brewerville, outside Monrovia for violating multiple sections of the Environmental Protection and Management Law of Liberia.

EPA Acting Executive Director, Hon. Randall M. Dobayou said S.S.S. Private Ltd.’s operation is not in conformity with sustainable environmental practice.

He told a news conference that S.S.S. Private Limited is discharging effluent directly into the environment without treatment and approval from the EPA.

The company is also unsustainably stockpiling waste (tires, metals, plastics) in the back of their facility in violation of the Environmental Protection and Management Law of Liberia.

Besides, the company is liable of refusing to pay the US$1,000 fine imposed by the EPA few months ago.

He disclosed that the company failed to attend several conferences with authorities of the EPA on the violations of it permit conditions.

“We cited them on December 27, 2018 but they refused to come. We invited them again on February 14, 2020 and February 22, 2020 respectively, but they again refused to come, neither did they write an excuse,” Dobayou told a news conference.

He added “during our assessment at their facility, we uncovered that S.S.S. Private Limited is operating under unsanitary condition.”

“S.S.S. Private Limited is further warned that this shutdown order shall remain enforced until it is proven that their new sustainable production plan is submitted to the agency for approval,” Hon. Dobayou said.

The management of S.S.S. Private has been warned from using its current facility to produce alcoholic or nonalcoholic beverages.
