EPA Launch REDD+ Safeguards Information System

Hon. Nathaniel T. Blama, Sr. Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer -EPA

The Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia (EPA), Dr. Nathaniel T. Blama is expected to launch Liberia’s REDD+ Safeguards Information System (SIS) Tuesday, July 22, 2019 at its central office in Sinkor,Monrovia.

the SIS was recently developed by Conservation International (CI) and Skills and Agricultural Development Services (SADS)
in consultation with Safeguards Working Group (SWG),with funding from the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF). Hence, the REDD+ Implementation Unit (RIU) has been the major supporting arm of this system development which is being managed by the EPA and the Forestry Development Authority (FDA).

The SIS is a practical, easy-to-use system built on existing information systems, and ensuring that information is accessible in an appropriate format for different stakeholders to meet their needs.
As Liberia is a signatory to the United Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the SIS is meant for providing information on how the UNFCCC REDD+ ‘Cancun’ safeguards are being addressed and respected throughout the implementation of the national REDD+ Strategy. Thus, the SIS one of the four essential elements that countries aiming to receive Results-Based Payments from REDD+ activities must have in place. Madam Danise Love Dennis, EPA Communications Specialist said in a press release issued on Monday, 22 July 2019.
